PSHE

At Burstow Primary School, we want children to love themselves, love who they are and to recognise the positive impact they can have on others. We aim to give children the qualities and attributes to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. PSHE is a school curriculum subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy, safe and prepared for life and work. When delivered at Burstow, PSHE education has an impact on both academic and non-academic outcomes for pupils. Ultimately, we want to create happy and healthy citizens of the world who care for themselves and others.

Implementation

At Burstow we follow the Jigsaw scheme of work.
Each half term, there is a scheme of work which works towards an ‘end product’, for example, The School Learning Charter or The Garden of Dreams and Goals. Each 'Piece' has two Learning Intentions: one is based on specific PSHE learning and one is based on emotional literacy and social skills development. The whole school works on the same Puzzle at the same time, meaning that each Puzzle can be launched with a whole-school assembly and learning can be celebrated by the whole school in a meaningful way.
The Relationships and Healthy Me Puzzles (units) philosophy starts by building positive self-image, a sense of identity and a healthy relationship with self, and from that starting point helps children grow healthy relationships with others. Health Education in Jigsaw embraces not only physical health but has a strong focus on mental health and emotional literacy throughout, and empowers children to be aware of their own thoughts and feelings and to know how to manage and regulate these (e.g. using Calm Me (mindfulness techniques). We bring our PSHE curriculum alive by carefully planning out visits and visitors.
